As of September, Mihai Mares announces a comeback of “Mares & Asociatii” law firm among the players on the Romanian business law market. Mihai Mares (see photo) was, until recently, a Managing Associate at Musat & Asociatii law firm, which he joined, together with his entire team, after the exit of the Spanish firm Garrigues from the local market. According to BizLawyer’s sources, Mares split from Musat & Asociatii as of September 1, 2011.

After the withdrawal of Garrigues in December 2010, Mares announced the transfer of the entire team coordinated by him as Country Managing Partner to Gheorghe Musat’s firm. However, although he joined Musat & Asociatii together with his lawyers and client portfolio, Mares was not promoted to partnership. This may be one of the reasons for his separation from one of the top three law firms in Romania.

According to a press release issued today by the new law firm, “Mares & Asociatii was and still is an independent reputed law firm, with a track record of success in the local market ever since 2006. The firm’s clients will benefit from the vast experience of our legal team, gathered in over 10 years of practice in important firms, such as Garrigues, the leading law firm in Continental Europe, whose Romanian office I have coordinated for three years".

By Decision No. 1758 of August 30, 2011, the Bucharest Bar approved the establishment of Mares & Asociatii as of September 6. According to the document reviewed by BizLawyer, Mares & Asociatii’s Partners will be: Mihai Mares, Cristian Mares, Ana Maria Kusak and Dalina Ioana Terzi. The fifth Partner is Simona Mares.

Our plans for the following year are mainly focused on preserving and expanding the firm’s existing client portfolio; becoming the firm of choice for companies active in the local market and making the shortlist of their preferred legal services providers; strengthening the professional relationships with top international law firms outside Romania and becoming their reliable partner”, said Mihai Mares, Managing Partner.

"We are all young and driven lawyers, no doubt we all have a longstanding experience, but what made me join this project of Mihai and what makes Mares & Asociatii a team is that we have similar convictions, we believe in the same professional values. And there is more," declared Ana Maria Kusak, a Partner at Mares & Asociatii.

According to the Bucharest Bar’s Decision, the law practices of Mihai Mares, Ana Maria Kusak and Dalina Ioana Terzi will be closed down.

To date, Mares & Asociatii’s team comprises 10 elite lawyers, out of which five Partners and five Associates, covering a wide range of areas of practice, including Corporate and Commercial Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, Finance and Taxation, Competition and State Aid, Energy and Infrastructure, Real Estate, Intellectual Property, Litigation and Arbitration.
