Romania plans to launch 5G tenders in autumn 2020

The Romanian National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications of Romania (ANCOM) recently announced the authority’s plans with respect to granting the additional license for 5G spectrum in Romania.
Mr Eduard Lovin, the Vice-President of ANCOM stated that ANCOM intends to adopt all the tender documentation in connection to 5G spectrum by the end of the third quarter of 2020, with an aim to finalise such procedure and grant the licenses for the additional 5G spectrum by the end of the fourth quarter 2020. The tender, which was originally scheduled for the end of 2019, has now been postponed to the second half of 2020.
Romania was among the first European states to have launched 5G applications last year, when three out of the four telecom operators launched 5G services on the local market.

The Romanian Government agreed via a memorandum adopted on 21 May 2020 to set-up an inter-institutional 5G working group. The 5G working group is charged among others with identifying the necessary measures to ensure the security of 5G networks in Romania, in accordance with EU recommendations. Private sector operators have access to and may attend the 5G working group’s meetings and may send proposals and suggestions.
