Population by domicile on Jan. 1, 2023, stands at 21.92 million people, down 0.4pct y-o-y

According to the INS, on January 1, 2023, the population of urban areas was 12 million people, down from January 1, 2022 (0.7%); that of rural areas was 9.617 million people, down slightly from January 1, 2022 (0.04%).

 
 
The population according to domicile was 21.92 million people on January 1, 2023, down 0.4% from January 1, 2022, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS), published Friday.
 
According to the INS, on January 1, 2023, the population of urban areas was 12 million people, down from January 1, 2022 (0.7%); that of rural areas was 9.617 million people, down slightly from January 1, 2022 (0.04%).
 
The female population on January 1, 2023 was 11.224 million people, down 0.4% from the same date the previous year; the same trend was recorded for the male population, which was 10.697 million people.
 
The process of demographic ageing continued in 2022, with a slight decrease (by 0.2 percentage points) in the share of young people (0-14 years) and at the same time an increase (by 0.4 percentage points) in the share of the elderly population (65 years and over) in the total population.
 
The demographic ageing index increased from 118.8 on January 1, 2022, to 122.6 elderly persons per 100 young persons on January 1, 2023. The average age of the population was 42.2 years, 0.2 years higher than on January 1, 2022. The median age was 42.8 years, up 0.4 years from January 1, 2022.
 
On January 1, 2023, the largest share in the total population was held by the 50-54 age group (8.5%). The same age group also had the largest share among women (8.3%), while among men the largest share was held by the 45-49 age group (8.8%).
 
However, the share of the 0-4 age group was 4.6%, lower than that of the 5-9 (4.8%), 10-14 (5.1%) and 15-19 (5.2%) age groups.
 
Data on the population by residence on January 1, 2023, will be available at locality level (municipality, city and commune), in the INS central database - BCD, from May 15, 2023.
